Started in 2001, the .NAME generic domain name extension is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to obtain john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level domain names remained active.
